Baltimore Orioles Set to Call Up Top Prospect Colton Cowser from Minor Leagues

One of the most exciting young teams in Major League Baseball continued its youth movement this week, with the Baltimore Orioles reportedly set to call up a top prospect with Houston-area roots.

According to MASN, the Orioles are expected to select the contract of outfielder Colton Cowser, ranked No. 2 in the team’s farm system and No. 14 overall in MLB’s prospect rankings. The move will reportedly occur before Baltimore’s game against the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Cowser, the fifth overall pick in the 2021 MLB draft, starred at Cypress Ranch High School and Sam Houston before starting his professional career. He was a first-team all-state outfielder as a senior at Cy-Ranch after hitting .411 with 38 RBI and 30 stolen bases, and he went on to earn various conference and national honors throughout his college career. Cowser was a Freshman All-American and the Southland Conference Hitter of the Year in his first year with the Bearkats, and he was named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list before the COVID-19 pandemic cut his sophomore season short. He went on to be named the Southland’s player of the year as a junior after posting a .374/.490/.680 slash line with 16 home runs, 17 stolen bases, 52 RBI and 61 runs in 55 games.

It didn’t take long for Cowser to start rising up MLB’s prospect rankings amid a blistering start to his time in the minors. He’s batted .305 with a .920 OPS, 31 home runs, 32 steals, 140 RBI and 198 runs in 227 games at the minor-league level, with a .330 batting average and 10 homers this year at Triple-A Norfolk. It is not yet clear when Cowser will make his MLB debut, as the Orioles had not officially announced the move as of publishing.
