Nothing came of the fifth final this year for Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler.
Austria’s flagship doubles are defeated by the Belgian duo Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen after 71 minutes 3: 6, 4: 6 in the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Hamburg.
Belgians deserve to win
After a balanced start, Erler/Miedler showed nerves with a score of 3:4 and had to accept a break in the decisive phase of the first set. The Belgians, seeded number four, then confirm this to lead the sentence.
In the second round, Gille/Vliegen again exploited a short period of weakness in the Austrians and cheered about the renewed break for the lead. Erler/Miedler then promptly have the chance of a direct re-break – but let the chance lie.
In the end, Gille/Vliegen celebrate a deserved entry into the final. In the ATP LIVE ranking, Erler/Miedler each made up one position after entering the semifinals. Next week, Austria’s flagship doubles will open at the home tournament in Kitzbühel.
