A Journey of Resilience and Success: The Inspiring Story of Tony Gosen Güette

There are those who have the ability or the gift to do many things, play different roles due to situations that affect their lives and in all of them they get ahead due to their positive attitude. An example of this type of character is embodied by 40-year-old Tony Gosen Güette from Caracas, who migrated to Colombia long before the socioeconomic crisis broke out in Venezuela.

His father died when he was very young and his mother was very distant with him, which is why he had a very difficult childhood since he was practically alone. Thank God, for having a very strong mentality, he did not fall into scourges such as drugs and crime in his country, according to what he narrates. “From a very young age I was well focused. I never had negative intentions, because I always knew that sport was my thing. I knew I had to fight and break through.” At 16 he decided to travel to Colombia, where an aunt lived, in order to make a new and prosperous life.

“I arrived in Cartagena at the end of 1996. I settled with an aunt, in the Crespo neighborhood, for a year and a half,” Tony commented. Later he moved to Barranquilla, where he was able to be with his mother and there in that city he met people who shook his hand and showed him the way.

“I graduated from high school at the El Carmen school and then studied systems technology at the Corporación Universitaria de la Costa (CUC),” he explained.

“I met Professor Harold Hoyos, whom I thank very much because he was an important person in my growth, mainly in basketball. I also met Professor Nilson Santiz, who also helped me a lot. This is how my basketball career began, first as a player and then as a coach, ”he maintained.

He remembers that the Salucoop Basketball Cup was very significant for him because he was at that great event, first as a player and then as a referee. Little by little he was acquiring knowledge in basketball, to the point of becoming someone highly respected in the union.

From one moment to the next, love appeared and that was when he met his first wife, who was at that time a great sports leader. That was how he went to live in Sincelejo and where he stayed for approximately eight years. With her he had two children.

His role was mostly to support his wife since she was the president of the Sucre Basketball League. “We did many tournaments in minor categories, especially one in the children’s category that was a complete success. With Sucre we also went to many national tournaments. The truth is that we did a great job in the Sucre League, ”she said.

Not everything was rosy for Tony. He had to dedicate himself to motorcycle taxis to support his family and combine this activity with his roles as coach and referee. Thanks to his dedication, another objective that he achieved in Sincelejo was to obtain a degree in public accounting at the Remington University of Medellín, which had an office in the capital of Sucre.

Unfortunately and due to irreconcilable differences, he separated from his wife and returned to Cartagena, in 2021, to seek new opportunities.

While already in La Heroica and at the suggestion of Barranquilla referee Tony Arrieta, he contacted José Viola and Kevin Díaz, two well-known referees from the city, in order to have an opportunity as a judge in the two referee schools. According to Tony Gosen, the reception they gave him was very good and he was able to be part of the collegiate body. This is how Tony Gosen began his era in the Bolivarian arbitration, and he is currently one of the best whistles in the city.

Things began to improve when he also met Professor Iván García, director of the Lanceros school, with whom he worked for some time in the technical training of children. “I learned a lot with Iván García and I want to thank him for the opportunity he gave me at his school,” she said.

Thanks to this acquired knowledge, four months ago Gosen opened his own basketball school in Barceloneta, in the north of Cartagena. There he has 12 students from the age of 5 to 11.

He is now in a new relationship, but they have no children yet. She lives in the Santa Monica neighborhood.
