A crushing victory and a last-second thriller in different ways allowed the teams of the Mārupe Sports Center and the United Football Academy “Olaine” to secure a place in the round of 16 of the Latvian Cup. The Pieriga clubs playing in the lower leagues of Latvia will probably be able to compete with the top league units in the next round.
For the first time, Mārupe football players reached the round of 16 of the Latvian Cup – one of the leaders of the second league defeated the first league runners-up “Dinamo Rīga” 11:0. The home team opened the scoring in the first minute, scored three more goals before the break, and humiliated their opponents with seven more accurate shots in the second half. Four goals were scored by team captain Kristians Korsak, three by Ahmed Basher, one each by Matvijs Marusiis, Oskars Osis, Viktors Chebotaryovs and Kārlis Neimanis.
The away game of AFA “Olaine” against last year’s Latvian Cup semi-finalist Grobiņa sports center team was completely different. In the battle of two clubs of the first league, the hosts, who are higher in the season ranking, achieved a seemingly natural two-goal lead in the first half, but at the beginning of the second half, within two minutes, Niks Edžus Bērziņš and Edgars Brics equalized. The game experienced a dramatic resolution already in the compensation period, when the hosts managed to put the ball into their own goal – 3:2 in favor of “Olaines”.
In the round of 16 of the Latvian Cup, six representatives of the lower leagues will be joined by ten clubs of the Latvian Premier League, the pairs will be determined by a draw. The current owners of the trophy are the Ķekava club “Auda”.
