Japanese sporting goods giant Mizuno enters the NFT field with its judo, running and football products domeet webmaster

Japanese sporting goods giant Mizuno has become the latest sportswear giant to enter the space with the launch of its first batch of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

In a press release from Mizuno, the company explained that it has launched three sets of tokens — one for each sport it specializes in. These NFTs have been released on the OpenSea platform and they will be auctioned on the Ethereum network.

The company is one of the largest manufacturers of judo uniforms in the world. It has provided competitive sportswear for the judo teams of Japan, the United States, Brazil, France and other countries.

The company explained that it had commissioned a digital artist named Ryokke Draw to create artwork featuring various Japanese judo champions. These include men’s champions Naohisa Takafuji and Hifumi Abe, and Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Naori Hamada in the women’s 78kg category.

Ryokke Draw has previously worked with companies such as ESPN on digital art related to mixed martial arts (MMA).

Outside of the martial arts world, Mizuno is primarily known as a manufacturer of running and football boots. The company is one of the main sponsors of the Osaka Marathon, a gold label event in world athletics and one of the most important sporting events in Japan.

The company’s running-themed NFT includes seven unique, commemorative Osaka Marathon-themed Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro running shoes—one for each color of the rainbow. Each NFT can be redeemed for “actual shoes of the same design.”

The “real” shoe will be the “only” of its kind “in the world,” the company wrote.

The company has also launched three redeemable NFT football boots in its Mizuno Alpha collection.

Not Just Mizuno: Japan’s Industry Players Eye NFT Expansion

Mizuno noted that the items will be auctioned on OpenSea, with bidding closing at midnight JST on March 31. Bidding will start at 0.5 Ethereum (ETH) for running items, and 0.3 Ethereum (WETH) for wrapping judo artwork and soccer apparel.

The Japanese government has identified NFT as its growth engine — and is trying to boost the industry’s growth by setting up a dedicated ministerial working group.

The Japanese government is also seeking to boost NFT-related businesses by awarding NFT incentives to its local government agencies.
