Sport in itself is a topic that has always fascinated us humans. Be it as an active athlete, or as a spectator on the sidelines or in the stands of a large stadium. In detail, however, the countries and cultures are divided into different sports. For example, basketball and baseball are popular in the US, and rugby and cricket in Australia. But if we turn our attention to our home country, the favorite is more than obvious. There is no way around football in Germany. Even if football of course an English export hit the history of football on German soil now goes back almost 150 years. Because the first game that can be described as football by today’s standards took place in Braunschweig in 1874. Before that, there were “soccer games” in Germany, but these were played according to rules derived from rugby. Over the decades, the initially fringe sport quickly became a mass phenomenon. This was first evident in the rapidly increasing number of football clubs and then became clear at the latest with the escalating wave of euphoria when Germany 1954 the legendary miracle of Bern experienced and was able to celebrate the first of today’s four world championship titles.

What about German club football?

The support of the entire sport and thus also of the world-famous professional clubs form to this day the countless small and regional football clubs. These form a comprehensive network of like-minded people throughout the country. No matter how small a village may be, there is a very high probability that you will find a football club there. This regionality is probably the secret of why the sport inspires so many people. Soccer is just ubiquitous and can be enjoyed by everyone. Perhaps still active as a child or adolescent, later as a trainer or as a spectator in the stands or in front of the television. Football is always available and can be played without much effort. A ball and well-fitting soccer shoes are all that is needed. In addition, the joy of sport is often passed on directly to the next generation. Therefore, many of us also associate beautiful and emotional moments with sport, which of course leads to an even stronger bond.

Other sports may come and go over the years, but a true football fan will always return to their sport. But of course you don’t have to struggle to get onto the pitch in the pouring rain or freeze in the stadium like the heroes of Bern did. On rainy days, the horizon can also be expanded with new things in other ways. Especially metropolises like Berlin have great activities to offer even when it rains. But as soon as the first rays of sunshine can be seen, the real fan will soon be back on or next to the nearest soccer field!
