SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated a clear 40:31 (18:11) win over HSV Hamburg in the Handball Bundesliga on Wednesday and secured third place in the table. Meanwhile, the Hanseatic people have completely different concerns.
After the license was revoked for the 2024/2025 season, the future for the HSHV handball players is uncertain. The HBL licensing commission had denied the Hamburg team permission to play after a “significant liquidity gap” had not been closed on time within 16 days. The Hamburg-based company has filed a lawsuit with the independent arbitration tribunal.
License decision before the season finale on June 2nd?
It is unclear when this will come together and decide on the case. According to HBL managing director Frank Bohmann, the aim is for a decision to be made in the week before the season finale on June 2nd.
HSVH goalkeeper Johannes Bitter is optimistic. “We are positive and hope that things continue,” said the 41-year-old to NDR. “We get an incredible amount of support from the handball world, everyone is excited.”
“We trust that in the end the decision will be made in the spirit of justice and proportionality.”

Flensburg punishes HSVH mistakes mercilessly
The HSVH professionals currently have no choice but to wait and concentrate on their job. They didn’t do that well against Flensburg. They kept the game open for the first quarter of an hour, then things went steeply downhill. The SG defended well, forcing the hosts to make mistakes, which Flensburg in turn punished mercilessly. With an interim 9:3 run, the Schleswig-Holsteiners took a 16:9 lead (26th).
Then Kevin Möller turned up the heat in the SG goal, taking away two seven-meter penalties and a free counter-attack from the home team. So the 18:11 lead at the break was logical for Flensburg. The hosts ran after this mortgage in vain in the second 30 minutes. They played confidently home with a clear away win and can look forward to seeing Hamburg again soon.
