Golf: Tiger Woods went under the knife to treat an ankle injury

Tiger Woods announced Wednesday that he underwent ankle surgery earlier in the day.

Woods suffers from subtalar osteoarthritis which is a pathology corresponding to wear of the cartilage of the subtalar joint, between the talus and the calcaneus.

The 47-year-old said the surgery was aimed at treating post-traumatic arthritis caused by a fractured talus, caused by his car accident in 2021.

The operation was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the HSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York, and the surgeon considered it a success.

Woods didn’t give a timeline for his recovery, but the 15-time Major winner said he was eager to begin his rehabilitation.

Woods has already undergone at least three procedures on his ankle following a serious car accident in Los Angeles in February 2021.

An 82-time winner on the PGA Tour, Woods has played twice in 2023.

At the Genesis Invitational in February, he finished -1 and in 45th place, 16 strokes behind the winner, Jon Rahm. Then, at the Masters earlier this month, Woods withdrew before the final round due to foot pain. The Masters was also won by Rahm.
