Stefanos Tsitsipas, the winner of Monte-Carlo and finalist of the Barcelona Open, had to admit defeat today against the Chilean Nicolas Jarry in three close sets. In addition to his playing performance, Jarry shone today with his mental strength.

At the beginning, Tsitsipas started very confidently and, thanks to his aggressive and offensive style of play, he quickly got the first break and took the lead 4-1. Jarry stuck with it, but couldn’t prevail against the strong Greek. Tsitispas converted his second set point to make it 6:3 in the first set.

The 28-year-old Jarry didn’t let this discourage him and started the second set confidently and offensively. The Chilean served confidently, remained mentally strong and continually fended off the Greek’s many break chances. Tsitsipas got nervous and Jarry took the second set 7-5. Things got really exciting again in the third set. Tsitsipas became a little unsure in the crucial moments and Jarry played his best tennis. Ultimately, 21st seed Jarry won the third set 6-4 and is now in the semi-finals of the Masters tournament. Tommy Paul will host the Chilean team in tomorrow’s semi-final. Paul had previously taken Hubert Hurkacz out of the tournament in what was also a very exciting three-set match.
