Football: It’s already over for Potter at Chelsea

It only lasted six months. Arrived on the Chelsea bench in September 2022 to replace Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter (47) was sacked this Sunday. The defeat conceded this Saturday to Aston Villa (2-0) was therefore one too many. Chelsea, which made large investments during the January transfer window (Enzo Fernandez, Joao Felix, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Noni Madueke), is only 11th in the Premier League.

Passed by Östersunds FK (Sweden), Swansea and Brighton before, Graham Potter therefore missed his first experience in a Top club. He leaves with a negative record in the Premier League: 7 wins, 7 draws and 8 defeats. But with him, Chelsea qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League. It is his Spanish assistant Bruno Saltor who will take over.

“Chelsea FC have announced that Graham Potter has left the club. Graham has agreed to work with the club to facilitate a smooth transition. During his career with the club, Graham took us to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future Bruno Saltor will take over as interim head coach. Along with our incredible supporters, we will all be supporting Bruno and the team for the rest of the season. We have ten Premier League games and a Champions League quarter-final to go. We will put all our effort and commitment into each of these games to end the season on a high,” club owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said in a statement.

For his succession, the English press evoked an interest from Chelsea for Julian Nagelsmann, recently sacked by Bayern Munich and replaced by … Thomas Tuchel.
