Pat Hoberg, Major League Baseball umpire, has denied the accusations and appealed the sanction; he faces a possible lifetime suspension.

Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire Pat Hoberg has been sanctioned for violating the league’s sports betting policies, according to ESPN sources. The MLB has acted rigorously following an investigation launched during spring training, although no evidence of manipulation has been found in the games that Hoberg refereed.

So far, the MLB has not issued any statement regarding the nature of the sanction, however, Hoberg has not worked any games so far this season.

The controversy comes amid a climate of strict surveillance by MLB, which recently imposed a lifetime ban on one player and suspended four others for gambling. Hoberg, who has denied the allegations and appealed the sanction, faces a possible lifetime ban under Rule 21 if he is found to have bet on games in which he participated.
