NFL: 4-year and $160 million pact for Daniel Jones with the New York Giants

The New York Giants signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year contract and used their franchise player tag for star running back Saquon Barkley, sources told ESPN.

The contract extension will net Jones $160 million. Jones will earn $82 million guaranteed. The contract also includes up to $35 million in bonuses, sources told ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

The deal came just minutes from the 4 p.m. Eastern Time deadline.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen had publicly stated that the team hoped to retain both players, which was made possible by the long-term agreement with Jones.

Barkley will earn $10.091 million in 2023 with the franchise player tag.

Barkley was given the non-exclusive tag, however, which means he can continue to negotiate with other teams, but the Giants can match any offers received. If they decide not to, they will get two first-round picks as compensation.

Jones, who turns 26 in May, is coming off the most productive season of his career and led the Giants to a winning season for the first time since being drafted No. 1 in 2019. He also played brilliantly in leading New York to a playoff win over Minnesota, setting the stage for nearly two months of contract negotiations.

Jones had 3,205 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions last season while also rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns.

Barkley once again showed he could make a difference, playing a full season in 2022 for the first time since his freshman year and finishing fourth in the NFL with 1,310 rushing yards. He scored 10 touchdowns, made 32 carries of 10 or more yards, and finished with 1,650 yards.
