THE CHANGE OF SPANISH JUDO

Sustainability was one of the three pillars of the Olympic Agenda in 2020 and during the last Olympiad, the IOC program and goals became even more linked. After reviewing the work carried out and highlighting new areas, the new Olympic Agenda 2020+5 contains 15 recommendations, and the report states that its intention is to “ensure greater solidarity, greater digitalisation, greater sustainability, credibility and a greater focus on the role of sport in society” (IOC, 2021).

Speaking with Carmen CALVO FERNANDEZ, Director of Communication, Marketing and Event Production and Member of the Steering Committee of the Royal Spanish Federation of Judo and Associated Sports, EJU found out exactly how it aligns with this IOC agenda.

In line with the IOC’s sustainability strategy, National Olympic Committees have worked hard with National Federations to gain support and effect change. The Spanish Judo Federation is among those who quickly signed an agreement with their NOC to be part of this change.

After the IOC drew up the 2020 agenda, we started with this project, a strategy along the lines of being healthy, aware, generating social mobility, focusing on the economy and gender equality. Three things we are really working on are social inclusion, education and digital transformation.

According to Calvo, the first federation to sign was the soccer federation, which had made considerable progress, followed by the rest of the national federations. She said judo and associated sports had already started working towards those goals before she signed on.

It was actually an initiative of our government, so we were already working on digitization, and in the areas of social inclusion and gender equality. There is a new law in place, which means listing cannot be avoided. Before, for example, blind athletes were under a different organization, whereas now they are included and part of our federation.

The Spanish Federation will work with the National Olympic Committee on sustainability and after this symbolic signing, we will apply all these policies in our sport. We don’t just have judo, so we will work together to be more efficient, educate to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and work on digital transformation.

Sport is a large component of society with the ability to effect great change.
