Where, if not in Buenos Aires, should Dominic Thiem get his first win of the season? The Austrian feels right at home in the Argentine capital and has an impressive record of eleven wins and just one defeat. This set it in Thiem’s most recent appearance three years ago in the semifinals against Diego Schwartzman.

A lot has happened in the career of the Lower Austrian since then. Grand Slam title, wrist injury, world rankings crash, management change. The friendship with Schwartzman remained. So it’s no wonder that Thiem and the Argentinian met on Court 2 for a doubles match on Monday. This was lost against Sebastian Baez and Facundo Bagnis with 5:7 and 4:6.

It will only get really serious for Thiem on Tuesday. The 2020 US Open winner will start with Alex Molcan, who was seventh. The world number 51. from Slovakia, Asche – just like Thiem – is part of his natural habitat and has reached three finals in clay court tournaments in his career. However, it was not enough for a title either in 2022 (Marrakech and Lyon) or a year before that (Belgrade).

The draw could have been better for Thiem though. Because the 29-year-old should not have boarded the plane to South America with excessive self-confidence. In his first four matches of the season, the Lower Austrian didn’t win a single set. The motto in Buenos Aires can therefore only be: Let the season begin for Dominic Thiem too.
