The Rise of Tommy DeVito: From Rookie Success to Future of the New York Giants

The quarterback threw eight touchdown passes against just three interceptions in nine appearances as a rookie for New York.

CEDAR GROVE — The small rectangular room on the second floor of the Cedar Grove municipal building was filled to capacity with 100 chairs, although only half of them were occupied. It served as the site for a ceremony honoring the quarterback of the United States. New York Giants, Tommy DeVito.

The undrafted free agent out of Illinois won three straight starts last season as a rookie. He captured the attention of the fans and the entire nation by his play, and their pride in his Italian heritage. He still lives with his parents in Cedar Grove, where he plans to place the plaque with the key to the town on a wall.

Los Giants they signed the quarterback Drew Lock to a one-year deal that guarantees him $5 million this offseason. Also, they tried to move up the order of draft picks to take a quarterback, presumably Drake Maye, according to multiple sources. DeVito He listened to what was being discussed.

“I was never worried,” he said. “Everything happens for a reason. I showed what I can do on the field. Obviously, there are ups and downs. But, being a rookie thrown out there, it’s kind of tough. I tried to make the most of it and then control what I can control.”

Clearly, the Giants still need to see more before they can start planning around DeVito in a larger role. There is no way to deny, however, that he has shown progress.

“Which Tommy did last season, another year in the system, Tommy has come a long way,” commented the general manager Joe Schoen during the current campaign recess.

DeVito spent his offseason in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, training alongside a group that included last year’s first-round pick, cornerback Deonte Banks. DeVito He said that one of his goals was to add weight and muscle to his lower body.

DeVito has also been nailed back into the playbook. He believes a second year in the same system will allow him to build on his past success. He has reviewed and studied every play from last season.

There was a lot to learn.

“Taking what the defense gives me,” he said, was the biggest lesson. “I think I was a little too aggressive at times. I got in trouble in a couple of games. There were two interceptions back to back. It was the exact same thing, back to back. But looking back, it was like, ‘Why the hell I did that?'”.

El head coach Brian Daboll spoke during the draft about having honest conversations with players. Not only regarding his game, but also his roles and his future.

What those conversations left us DeVito It was positive.

“I think I kept my composure well. I played well,” he noted. “Obviously, there’s a ton of room to improve, whether it’s learning the finer details of the offense, the deeper meaning of it all, as opposed to knowing my part, knowing everyone’s part, whether it’s the passing game or the running game. ; help in any way or form between the ears.

“My growth is going to shoot through the roof now that I have all the organized team activities and training camp, all that stuff that I didn’t have last year. So, it’s really what it was. All mental.”
