The dismissal of Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano at 2: 3 in Mönchengladbach made waves. Now the supposedly fouled Alassane Pléa spoke up.
In the 8th minute of the game in Mönchengladbach, Pléa fell just before the Munich penalty area after being touched by Upamecano. Then referee Tobias Welz decided on the emergency brake and showed the defender the red card.
A scene that particularly upset Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann after the game and led to a furious storm in the referee’s cabin.
However, Pléa himself saw the referee’s decision as justified: “Unfortunately, I didn’t see Dayot anymore and couldn’t speak to him anymore,” he said Sport1: “He touched my shoulder lightly while I was running. That made me fall. Why should I let myself fall? Otherwise I would have been free in front of the goal with the ball.”
The penalty was also clear for the French: “Dayot was the last man.”
Alassane Pléa: “Bought jersey from Müller”
Overall, Pléa played a major role in Borussia’s success, as it was he who set up Jonas Hofmann’s 2-1 lead in the second half. “I’m happy that we were able to win this difficult game,” said the 29-year-old and immediately announced a personal success: “I got Thomas Müller’s shirt.”
That jersey should have been relatively fresh. Ultimately, it was Müller who was hit particularly hard by his team-mate’s dismissal – he had to leave shortly afterwards as Nagelsmann brought on a new defensive player in João Cancelo to compensate for Upamecano’s departure. A decision that hurt Nagelsmann himself in the end.
