A topper to quickly forget: Antwerp and Club Brugge do not score | Jupiler Pro League 2022/2023

In his sixth game as Club coach, Scott Parker continued to move the pawns. At the back, Mata and Boyata were replaced by Hendry and Mechele, while Jutgla and Skov Olsen’s injuries also required some work at the front. At Antwerp, Stengs relieved his compatriot Janssen on the penalty bench, while newcomer Keita immediately got a starting place.

Anyone who came to the Bosuil Stadium with high expectations was disappointed. The match turned out to be a topper only on paper. Lots of midfield play, no threat ahead. Mignolet only had to take action once in the first half on a shot by Muja, after a clumsy loss of the ball by Odoi. The danger from Bruges was limited to a blocked volley from Vanaken.

The second half remained in the same bed sick. Club was dealing in yellow cards instead of opportunities and Antwerp could hardly pose a threat either. Only Janssen was able to test Mignolet’s fists, Ekkelenkamp claimed in vain and unjustly a penalty in the resumption after a duel with Mechele.

Only in the final phase did Antwerp set up a bit more. De Laet just couldn’t get the ball under control at the far post on a headed corner kick, Mignolet kept Club upright with a very alert reaction. In extra time, De Laet sniffed the 1-0 again. He hit a cross from Kerk in one time, but saw his volley just whiz over the goal.
