A BOLA – Recipes: Benfica 24th in Europe and best outside the ‘Big 5’ in 2021/22 (Benfica)

Benfica, with revenues of €196.7M during the previous season, was the 24th club in Europe in terms of the highest revenues in the 2021/22 season, and the best outside the ‘Big 5’ – the five main European leagues , England, Germany, Italy, France and Spain -, in a list in which, in the ‘top 30’, out of this handful of nations, and in addition to the reds, only Ajax from Amsterdam (Netherlands), in 27th place , with revenues of €182.7 M, is also an exception to the hegemony of the five countries.

This is the result of the annual Football Money League study, released today by the consultancy Deloitte, in which Benfica and Ajax are ‘spears in Africa’, but, to give you an idea, in 24th place, and ahead of Benfica , comes Brighton, with €198.4 M in revenue in the past season.

Manchester City, with €731 M in revenue, continues, as in 2020/21, to lead, in a list in which the astronomical sums received from television broadcasting rights are reflected in the ‘top 30’: three of the first four classified are of the Premier League – the exception is the European and Spanish champions, Real Madrid, in second place, with €713.8 M in revenue – or, six of the top ten… ‘top 30’.

Still new, Liverpool is now third (€701.3 M) having surpassed, for the first time, Manchester United, which fell to fourth position, with €688.6 M, in an exhaustive report that proves that the revenues of the football «returned to pre-pandemic level [do covid-19]», with England digging deeper and widening the gap to the rest of the countries.

Only the first 20 clubs in the ‘top 30’ earned, in 2021/22, €9,200 M, roughly the same amount as in 2018/19 (before the pandemic). A 13 percent increase in revenue, when compared to the same period of the ‘too 30’ of the previous season analyzed by Deloitte, 2020/21, in which the revenues of the 30 totaled €8,200 M.

Unsurprisingly, the box office receipts for the 30 soared from €111M to… €1400M. Commercial revenues rose by eight percent, while the value of TV transmission rights fell by 11 percent.

As for the composition of the ‘pie’ of revenues, and referring only to the ‘top 20’, it consists of 44% of revenues from television transmission rights, 41% from the commercial area and 15% from box office and revenues of game day.

Contributing to the leadership of the two-time English champion, Man. City, commercial revenues skyrocketed from €65 M in 2020/21 to… €373 M in 2021/22.
