Weightlifting association must still register Kuworge for World Cup

4.13 pm: The Dutch weightlifting association NGB must still register Enzo Kuworge for next week’s World Weightlifting Championships in Bogotá. Kuworge won the summary proceedings he had filed against the union, in which he demanded that he still be able to participate in the world title tournament.

The union had recently withdrawn Kuworge’s registration because the weightlifter did not want to sign a new top sports contract. “He would be prevented from working with his own coach,” reports sports law attorney Nick Poggenklaas. “The judge followed Kuworge’s argument that the union acted unlawfully by withdrawing the weightlifter’s registration.”

The NGB must still register Kuworge for the World Cup on Thursday at the latest on the basis of the agreements that previously applied between the association and the athlete. That also means that Kuworge’s personal coach can accompany him at the World Cup.

“I am relieved that there is finally clarity about my participation,” says Kuworge. “I do regret that it was necessary to start legal proceedings, but I am glad that the judge has recognized that I have the right to participate with my own guidance. I hope that together we can put the importance of weightlifting back on one.”

According to Kuworge’s lawyer, formal permission must still be obtained from the international weightlifting association before Kuworge’s World Cup participation is official.

IndyCar champion Palou new reserve driver F1 team McLaren

4.12 pm: Alex Palou is the new reserve driver for the McLaren Formula 1 team. The 25-year-old Spaniard will combine that role with his appearance in the American IndyCar Series. He was champion there last year.

Palou made his debut in Formula 1 on behalf of McLaren in October during the first free practice session for the United States Grand Prix. According to team boss Andreas Seidl, Palou had impressed the team at the time. “Given his performance, it is great to increase his role in the team. We look forward to working more closely with him.”

McLaren will have Briton Lando Norris and Australian debutant Oscar Piastri as drivers next year. Daniel Ricciardo drove for the team this year, but he had to make way. Ricciardo will be reserve driver at Red Bull next year.

Roads KNWU and sprint coach René Wolff separate

11:55 am: The KNWU has decided not to extend the contract with track coach René Wolff that runs until February 1, 2023. Until then, both parties have agreed to continue working in good harmony.

The national coach of the sprinters was appointed at the beginning of 2022, after having previously been active for the Dutch cycling association. Under his leadership, several European and global titles were won on the track this year.

Head coach Jan van Veen of the KNWU says in an explanation of the decision: „We would like to thank René for his efforts and wish him every success in the future. With a view to the rapidly approaching European Championships and also the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, a good solution is being sought in the short term.”

Almering will stop as general director of FC Den Bosch at the beginning of 2023

11:07 am: FC Den Bosch says goodbye to general director Rob Almering early next year. The 57-year-old director, who will remain involved with the first divisionist as an advisor for the time being, will resign from his duties on 1 February.

“Rob was director of FC Den Bosch during a difficult period. He has solved some very complicated cases. This has given the club perspective and air for the future. We are therefore pleased that we can continue to rely on Rob’s expertise and seniority. In an advisory role, he can continue to make an impactful contribution to the club’s growth potential in a way that suits him seamlessly,” said Huub van Mackelenbergh, chairman of the supervisory board.

FC Den Bosch, the number 13 of the Kitchen Champion Division, played in the Eredivisie for the last time in the 2004-2005 season.

The Brabant club expects to present a successor in the short term.

NEC presents Nick Kersten as head of football affairs

8:59 am: Nick Kersten returns to NEC as head of football affairs. The 37-year-old Nijmegen resident has been active at NEC for more than fourteen seasons in the past, in various positions. Kersten signs a contract until the summer of 2026 and will start immediately.

Last season, Kersten held sway at Excelsior as technical director. He did this with results, because he once again put together a selection with which the team from Rotterdam was eventually promoted to the Eredivisie via the play-offs at the end of the season. After a difference of opinion, the Nijmegen resident closed the door in Rotterdam behind him in July of this year.

Technical director Carlos Aalbers is happy with Kersten’s return: “Nick has proven to be a valuable force for NEC in the past. With his knowledge and experience, he and me, chief scout Senol Kök and his team, will play an important role in generating value for NEC.”

“After several conversations, in combination with the good feeling I have at NEC, I am happy to return to this new position. A clear plan has been presented to me, to which I would like to contribute. The focus is on expanding the foundation that exists in the academy, scouting and the first team,” says Nick Kersten.

Tatum helps the Celtics earn their fifth straight NBA win with 49 points

7:47 am: Jayson Tatum led the Boston Celtics in the NBA with 49 points past the Miami Heat. It was 134-121 at the TD Garden in Boston. The Celtics already recorded their fifth win in a row.

Tatum ended November in style. He scored 30 points or more nine times last month. Only Larry Bird has ever recorded a personal score of more than 30 points on behalf of the Celtics in more games in the same month. On behalf of the Miami Heat, Max Strus and Bram Adebayo both scored 23 points.

The 24-year-old Tatum admitted that his teammate Grant Williams had predicted that he would score 50 points. In the end, he was one point short. “I have scored 50 points before. Someday I will do that again”, Tatum stated dryly. “This was a good test. Heat is a team we have played against a lot over the years and no matter who plays we bring out the best in each other.”

The Celtics and Heat faced each other in the Eastern Conference Finals last season. The Celtics won 4-3 and eventually lost to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.

The Celtics are doing well again this season. They lead the Eastern Conference with eighteen wins and four losses. Heat is much less on track and has won only ten of the 22 games played.
