Flensburg defeats Foxes in the DHB Cup

DSG Flensburg-Handewitt won the top game in the DHB Cup against Füchse Berlin and reached the round of 16. The four-time cup winner prevailed 34:32 (16:14) and inflicted the capital city club’s first competitive defeat of the season.

The SG’s top scorer was Emil Jakobsen with ten goals. National player Paul Drux scored seven times for the foxes, who also had to accept their only point loss in the league (31:31) in Flensburg. “We are very happy to be one lap further. That gives us self-confidence, it was a very tough game,” said SG trainer Maik Machulla on Sky.

Flensburg was in the lead for the entire second half, but Berlin couldn’t be shaken off even without top star Mathias Gidsel (hand injury). The decision was only made in the final second when left winger Jakobsen scored the final score. “It’s bitter,” said Berlin’s captain Drux, speaking of a “tough fight. We showed what we’re made of, but we didn’t have the strength at the back.”

The second round was also the end of the line for HC Erlangen, the surprise team from the previous cup season. Last year’s semi-finalist lost to MT Melsungen 30:34 (14:17). TBV Lemgo Lippe, recently even twice in the Final Four, meanwhile won the second division club VfL Lübeck-Schwartau with 32:23 (17:12).
