Krefeld. Full of pride and anticipation, athletes from various Krefeld clubs carried the Special Olympics NRW torch through the city on April 24th.

Mayor Gisela Klaer and city director Markus Schön first welcomed the participants in the foyer of the town hall. After the torch was lit and the starting signal was fired at 6 p.m., the eight-kilometer route to the Covestro Sports Park in Uerdingen was covered as a relay. At the end there was a barbecue evening together in the beach club. Natascha Dauben from the Special Olympics Committee passed the torch virtually to the city of Emsdetten. “It was a wonderful sight to see the start of the torch relay at the town hall,” says city director Markus Schön. “I consider it a great honor to be able to light the torch and confirmation that we are on the right track in Krefeld when it comes to sport and inclusion. There has been a lot of movement on the topic in our sports and club landscape – and that’s exactly the right thing to do.”
