Football, as we know it today, started in England in 1863. The Football Association held its first meeting in the Freemason’s Tavern in Great Queen Street, London. That meeting was the first of a series of five meetings held during October and December of the same year. These meetings produced the first set of comprehensive rules for the game.
Rules
The Rules of Football are a collection of rules that govern the game. These laws are fairly straightforward and easy to understand, but some of the details can be a bit controversial. Ultimately, they are decided by referees and players must abide by them.
Players
There are a number of different types of players in football, each with a specific role and ability. A forward, for example, is the team’s most advanced player and is responsible for scoring goals. In addition, a run-off area must be at least three meters in length and free of obstructions, such as floodlight columns or dugouts. Lastly, the surface of the run-off area must be identical to the playing area.
Field goals
Field goals are attempts to score points from the goal line. Field goals are worth three points, while a touchdown is worth six points. They are usually attempted under specific circumstances. The goal is a structure with a horizontal crossbar suspended 10 feet above the ground and two vertical goalposts that are 18 feet 6 inches apart. In American football, the goal posts are placed on each end line.

Football strategy lends itself well to mathematical analysis. In fact, one entrant into the Origins tournament used game theory to create charts of his opponent’s plays and made it to the finals before losing the championship game by touchdown or field goal.
