The Alibegovic Dynasty: A Basketball Story of Success and Family

The small forward of APU Udine Mirza Alibegovic was a guest on Palla A2, the TGR Rai podcast in collaboration with the Lega Nazionale Pallacanestro, together with his brother Amar, center of the Trapani Sharks. Protagonists in their respective teams, the two carry on their shoulders a surname that has so far earned 6 promotions to Serie A1, also thanks to their father Teoman, now manager at Fortitudo Bologna.

At least one of the three will be disappointed by these playoffs and Mirza already has in mind who needs to take a step back: “Dad has already won a lot, so I hope that as a good gentleman he will let his children have some fun (laughs, ed.)”.

However, above all basketball flows in the Alibegovics’ blood, from an early age an opportunity to play but also to compete, as Mirza says laughing: “Now I’m here at home, in Moruzzo, right in front of the basket where I played the f**k to Amar and Denis (the last of the three brothers, playing for Paperdi Caserta in Serie B, guard/winger like Mirza, ed.)”. Amar somewhat reluctantly confirms: “Yes, I have to say that Mirza was the strongest as a child, he was unstoppable. I usually gave up after one or two games, while Denis went on for hours. I was the poorest, shortest (” and fat”, adds Mirza laughing, ed.), the least physically gifted. Plus I lacked motivation a bit, because I saw Mirza doing very well and dad knows who he is. When I was about to quit I gave myself one last summer of time and it was the right choice, because I grew a lot and by improving step by step a fire was lit that hasn’t stopped yet.” A fire that brought Amar all the way to the Euroleague, while Mirza chose to remain in A2: “There is nothing more beautiful than seeing my brother at the highest levels in Europe, I’m not jealous. I too have had my experiences , like the Champions League with Capo d’Orlando, and I played them well.”

In fact, the family is always travelling, with a passport situation that has sometimes sparked some laughter. Mirza tells it: “When we arrived at the border it always seemed like it was a joke: Amar and I have Italian and American passports, mum the Bosnian one and dad the Slovenian one.” Many different languages and cultures, all together, which as the three brothers grew up they ended up uniting, as Amar says: “We mixed the three languages: ours, Bosnian, with Italian and English, the language of the NBA idols. Our parents didn’t like it, but they ended up doing it too.”

Over the years the Alibegovics have proven to be true promotion specialists: father Teoman has won 3 in his career, Bologna, Trieste and Udine, Amar has one with Virtus Roma and finally Mirza has 2, Brescia and Vanoli Cremona. All unforgettable experiences for the Bianconeri: “The experience in Brescia was an incredible springboard for then going to Turin. Last year at Vanoli Cremona there was an atmosphere never seen before”. The key to moving up is clear: “There is no talent that can beat the pack.”

Speaking of these playoffs, Mirza expressed himself as follows on the scoreboard, which sees all three Friulian teams on the same side: “These matches risk becoming a nightmare, we know well the value of a team like Cividale, which comes from 10 consecutive victories, but also of Trieste, which in my opinion will reach the final despite the subdued season.”
