Beaten 2-1 the day before, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar was merciless for the Cape Breton Eagles, whom they crushed by a score of 8-2, Tuesday evening at Center 200 in Sydney.
The Côte-Nord team gave themselves a quick 3-0 lead in the first seven minutes of play, on their first four shots, against goalkeeper Nicolas Ruccia who was visibly not in his form from the day before and previous playoff games.
It was 4-1 after one period and Justin Poirier already had three goals. His 4th, early in the second, signaled the end of the match for Ruccia who did not look good on two goals from Poirier. Brandon Lavoie, who has no experience in the QMJHL, came on in relief.
Oddly, the team’s second goalkeeper, Jakub Milota, headed to Finland to participate in the World Under-18 Championship with the Czech Republic. He did very well this season, participating in 33 games for the Eagles.
Five points for Poirier
Poirier finished the game with four goals and an assist. Isaac Dufort (2), Donavan Arsenault and Justin Gill scored the other goals for the Drakkar, which used its two goalkeepers. Charles-Édward Gravel was replaced by young Lukas Beckman with a score of 8-1 and three minutes remaining in the second period.
Among the Eagles, frustration was felt quickly. Their leading scorer, Cam Squires, had the bad idea of fighting with Alexis Bernier midway through the first period. Both were expelled.
Ahead 3-1 in the series, the Drakkar will try to put an end to it Thursday evening in front of its noisy supporters at the Henry-Leonard Center.

Meanwhile, the Drummondville Voltigeurs took a 3-0 lead in their series by winning 3-2 in Victoriaville. Justin Côté had the goal that broke the 2-2 tie midway through the third period. Alexis Gendron scored the first two goals for the Voltigeurs. The Tigres’ response came from Maxime Pellerin twice. The Voltigeurs will try to put an end to it on Wednesday evening in Victoriaville.
