Minor baseball is healthier than ever in Magog

STADIUM. Minor baseball continues to grow in Magog. While there were around sixty players less than a decade ago, there are no less than 180 this year in the local association.

The increase has also been gradual over the past few years, as we went from 128 to 160 players between 2019 and 2021.

And this enthusiasm is not about to fade, if we rely on the latest registration statistics.

“We have around sixty young people in our smallest categories, 5-6-7 years old. It looks really good for the future”, rejoices the president of Baseball Magog, Caroline Ouellette.

“It’s really nice to see them play at this age, especially when we play matches on the small field at the Théroux stadium. It is here that many will make their first home run.

The Magogoise president (on the photo) believes that the popularity of baseball in the region follows the same trend as for all of Quebec. “It’s a sport that is growing everywhere. We follow the wave, ”she argues.

According to Baseball Quebec’s 2021 annual report, more than 33,000 players were registered for activities last year. For 2022, this number is estimated at more than 35,000.

And on an encouraging note, the presence of girls in the field is following the upward trend. “We have women’s teams in the U9, U11 and U16 groups,” says Caroline Ouellette, who herself was at the origin of the Cubsettes (first all-female team) in 2019.

We even revived the name of the senior Cubs, with a team made up of young adults playing in a regional league.

To paraphrase an old slogan, one could easily say that “the fun has returned to the stadium”.
