Willem II has strengthened himself with Lucas Woudenberg. The 28-year-old left wing defender will wear the Willem II shirt for the next three seasons. ‘Everything has to make way for promotion.’

Woudenberg played in Feyenoord youth and was rented out by the Rotterdammers for two seasons to Excelsior and NEC at a later age. Until his switch to sc Heerenveen in 2017, he played a total of fourteen times for Feyenoord.

yes
At sc Heerenveen, Woudenberg seized his chance. He played 25 games in his debut season. After five seasons and 121 duels for Heerenveen he thinks it’s time for something new. ‘I was on a free transfer and on holiday when my agent called me and said Willem II was interested. Other clubs from the Eredivisie, KKD and abroad have also called. In the end, after a few good conversations here, I took the plunge and said ‘yes’ to Willem II.’

Woudenberg does not see the fact that Willem II will be playing a level lower next year as a disadvantage, but as a challenge. “Promotion is a very nice goal to fight for. Everything that comes our way has to give way. And I know how the supporters are here, it’s great that they are always so on top of the team.’

‘A wanted boy’
In front of td It was not easy for Teun Jacobs to bring in Woudenberg. ‘Lucas is a popular boy. That is not surprising given his experience and qualities. Due to the developments surrounding Derrick Köhn, we were already working with Lucas. We are very happy that he chooses us despite the offers from other clubs. We can use a type like Lucas very well inside and outside the lines. He is smart, does what he says and is physically very strong and a very complete left back.’

positive words
In Tilburg, Woudenberg will meet former teammates Jizz Hornkamp (sc Heerenveen) and Joshua Smits (NEC). He spoke about the club with the Wessel Dammers who have since left. ‘Before you sign with a club as a player, you would like to have some more information. That’s why I called Wessel. He said nice, positive words about his time at the club.’

Woudenberg is not a much scoring defender. He scored three goals in 205 official matches in the Netherlands. ‘I scored exactly two of my three goals against Willem II. Let me make up for that this season, haha!’
