Moira earns silver; Silvestre and Sánchez, bronze in the European Judo Open

SAINT SUNDAY. Moira Morillo got a silver medal, while Eiraima Silveste and Ariela Sánchez won bronze medals at the 2022 European Judo Open Championships that concluded this Sunday in Madrid, Spain.

With their performances, the three judokas added points for a better position in the world ranking in their respective categories.

Morillo, in over 78 kilos, took the silver after losing in the final against Nisrin Bousbaa Dab, from Spain. In her first fight, Moira beat India’s Apoorva Mahesh Patil and then knocked out New Zealand’s Sydnee Andrews.

The bronze medals went to Tina Radic of Croatia and Sydnee Andrews of New Zealand.

Eiraima won the bronze by defeating Cristina Heck, from the Netherlands, in the repechage of the minus 78 kilos category. Silvestre beat Julie Pierret, from France, in her first match, and then beat the Ukrainian Yuliia Kurchenko. She in the semifinal she was defeated by Linda Politi, from Italy.

The gold went to Teresa Zenker, from Spain, and the silver went to the Italian Linda Politi. The other bronze went to Yelyzav Lytvynenklo of Ukraine.

On Saturday, Ariela Sánchez won the bronze in the minus 63 kilos category by defeating Vlada Kopnyayeva, from Spain, in the playoffs.

In the preliminary round, she beat Mathilde Briant of France and then dispatched Germany’s Annabelle Winzig, but on the third try she fell to Cristina Cabana Pérez of Spain.

The gold medal was won by Cristina Cabana Iva Oberan, who beat the German Agatha Schmidt in the final, who won the silver medal. The other bronze went to Iva Oberan, from Croatia.

The participation of the athletes in the Judo Open was possible with the support of the Group Creating Olympic Dreams (CRESO).

In other results, José Nova was out of competition by losing his first fight in more than 100 kilos, while Antonio Tornal, in less than 73 kilos, won the first and fell in the second fight.

The contest was attended by a total of 454 athletes from the five continents.
