Baseball: Split bei Athletics vs. Grasshoppers

In the only double header of the Baseball Bundesliga on Sunday, the ASAK Athletics and the Grasshoppers Traiskirchen part with one Split. Meanwhile, the Vienna Metrostars were in action in the Confederations Cup – Europe’s second highest division: The Viennese suffered a narrow defeat against the Croatian representative Olimpija Karlovac and thus finished sixth.

The Traiskirchen Grasshoppers started successfully in the double header against the ASAK Athletics. Grasshoppers pitcher Tobias Kiefer threw a “complete game” and only had to give up a single run. But Kiefer was also successful on offense right from the start – he started the encounter with a 2-RBI home run. The previous season’s MVP continued to hit bases throughout the game and kept his cool at the mound. The Athletics managed to get a run in the eighth inning, but it wasn’t enough to catch up. Traiskirchen finally won the first game 4:1.

In the second meeting of the day, the Athletics managed to take revenge promptly. The guests were able to write against Davin Tongue on the Mound in the second and third. Traiskirchen was only able to book the first run in the sixth period, but then the Athletics had the right answer and a single by Sammy Hackl made it possible for Martin Gruber to make it 4:1 in the meantime. The Grasshoppers didn’t get back into the game and finally suffered a 2:7 defeat.

Metrostars finish 6th in Confederations Cup
On the last day in Europe’s second-highest playground, the Metrostars were still concerned with placement cosmetics in the match for fifth place against the Croatian representative Olimpija Karlovac. Both teams already noticed the limited resources after the tough tournament week, but the Metrostars started strong and were already leading 6:0 in the 3rd inning. But the Croatians fought back courageously, although starter Jakob Simonsen once again delivered a strong game on his third appearance this week. However, the dam broke in the seventh inning when Karlovac took the lead for the first time. Reliever Nicolas Schadler prevented further runs, but the offensive could not counteract anything. The Metrostars eventually finished sixth in the Confederations Cup.
