Impending Sale of AS Saint-Étienne: An Optimistic Outlook from Arsenal Insider

Expected for many years by Saint-Etienne supporters, the sale of the club has never been so close to being completed. The project led by Ivan Gazidis and the Kilmer Sports Ventures group is in the process of acquiring AS Saint-Étienne. Before that, Ivan Gazidis comes from two experiences in two very large European clubs: Arsenal first between 2009 and 2018 as general manager then AC Milan between 2018 and 2022, still as general manager of the Italian club.

Last night, Julien Laurensjournalist and English football expert spoke in theAfter Foot of RMC. Asked about Ivan Gazidis whom he knew well at Arsenal during the nine years spent by the probable future boss of the Greens in London, the journalist is rave about him: “I not only know Gazidis but also the two people he will come with: Huss Fahmy and Jaeson Rosenfeld. I knew all three of them well from my Arsenal days. I only have positive things to say. Don’t jump on me Saint-Etienne supporters if things don’t go very well afterwards (smile) but these are three profiles that complement each other very well. Gazidis the thinking head, he who was the boss of MLS and who then did a good job at Milan afterwards. At Arsenal it wasn’t easy, it was Wenger and after Wenger to manage, there wasn’t too much money, it was complicated. He’s the thinking head, he’s someone extremely intelligent who speaks several languages, who is very well educated, who knows football very well, who has a very good network.”

Afterwards, Julien Laurens expresses itself on Huss Fahmy et Jaeson Rosenfeld, the two men approached to support him in the Saint-Etienne project. Here again, he praises it: “Huss Fahmy is the negotiator, who also has a very good network in his recruitment, in the players he can seek out, in the contacts and relationships he can also have. Rosenfeld is the “geek” as the English say: the expert in stats, data, transfers, who watches the matches, who knows the players, who knows everyone, everywhere. He has this knowledge of the game. I think it’s very good, honestly.”

Julien Laurens is very optimistic about this project and finds similarities with the one carried out in Nice by Ineos: “When we see the other French and foreign clubs which have been sold to certain consortiums or people who are not all very legitimate or very clean either… At least there is knowledge there. In Strasbourg there was no knowledge at the beginning. Afterwards they went looking for people but basically there was no knowledge. There is already money there, with Tanenbaum and his Kilmer group. He is a billionaire who created a company which allows him to acquire franchises or sports clubs around the world, a bit like Ineos. It’s a little bit the same except they’re Canadian and not British. It’s not Ratcliffe but Tanenbaum and Jean-Claude Blanc today it’s Gazidis, it’s his equivalent. For me it’s very serious and it’s very positive compared to what I experienced at Arsenal with them.”
