Fallen greatness Nottingham Forest returns to the Premier League after 23 years | Premier League

Nottingham Forest was one of the biggest clubs in Europe 45 years ago. Forest became English national champion in 1978 and also surprised in Europe the following year, with the final win in the European Cup I, the then Champions League. A year later they again won the Cup with the Big Ears.

But the tide would turn for Forest. More than a decade later, the club slipped further and further, until it was relegated in 1993. In 1999 Forest played for the last time at the highest level, then followed an agony of many years, which even took them to the third division.

But that agony has now come to an end. Nottingham finished fourth in the Championship last season, but managed to qualify for the promotion match at Wembley after winning the play-off against Sheffield United. It had to work its way past Huddersfield.

In an exciting match, the only goal was scored just before half-time. The unfortunate Levi Colwill gave Huddersfield the death blow with an own goal. After that Forest did not relinquish the lead.

The tradition club can make its appearance again in the Premier League. In addition to Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth also rise to the first division. Both teams had already been promoted after finishing first and second respectively in the Championship.
