Basketball, revolution in men’s championships – Sport

A revolution in the basketball championships is coming, from the 2024-2025 season. The National Basketball League has embraced the decision taken in the last federal council by the Fip: so in two years the A2 series will be reduced to 20 teams and the B series will be split into two championships, one national of 32 and one interregional of 96 with the added lineups from C Gold. So we go back to 2013 when under the Legadue there were DnA and DnB.

Starting from the top, the A1 series will be 16 teams and the A2 20, with the transition from the current 28 which will see an intermediate championship to 24 before the final reduction. The 8 relegated from the A2 series will form with the best 24 of the B (the criterion for establishing them is not yet known) a tournament of 32 teams, formations that will be divided into two groups of 16. It is possible that the possibility of registering a foreigner will be granted. The 40 remaining B teams will join 56 formations from C Gold (or C Silver for regions not hosting that tournament) to form a 96-team interregional league, run by the regional committees and not the LNP, which should be divided into 8 groups of 12. This will be the last national championship, because then we move on to the regional ones.

The C Gold and C Silver series will therefore be abolished to give life to a single tournament with 16 groups at national level to ensure a balanced exchange with the new B2. In the coming weeks the regulations that will lead to this change will be established and the first changes could be applied from the 2022-2023 season, or the next one, so much so that the new formulas should be included in the annual organizational provisions that will be published in May.

Also interesting is the introduction of the figure of the sports worker which will lead to important tax and economic benefits for players, managers or people who carry out primary activities in the club, even if the professional status will remain only for the top flight. In the women’s field, on the other hand, no news is expected with the confirmation of the A1 series, followed by the two-group A2, the Regional B and the Regional C.
