According to BILD information, Schalke boss Bernd Schröder (55) called Aki Watzke (62) by phone. The BVB boss and DFB vice had promised the Royal Blues help should there be a break with Russia’s sponsor Gazprom in the course of the Ukraine war.
Watzke on Saturday evening to ZDF’s “Aktuelles Sportstudio”: “If this also requires the solidarity of the other clubs in Germany in order to lead them reasonably well out of this situation, then we have to discuss how we can do it.”
Despite all the rivalry: BVB boss Watzke wants to support Schalke!
Watzke: “I’m very happy that Schalke showed their attitude and I hope that it will continue.”
He praises the new management of the former rival, who is currently fifth in the second division. Watzke: “Schalke 04 is an important part of German football culture. I am very happy that the new management is now demonstrating a clear stance and that can only result in ending this sponsorship.”

In the game in Karlsruhe (1:1), Schalke wore “Schalke 04” on their shirt instead of the lettering of their (still) main sponsor.
