Austrian Judokas Struggle on Day Three of European Championships in Zagreb

From a red-white-red perspective, there were no major reports of success on the third day of competition at the European Championships in Zagreb. Only Maria Höllwart (+78/ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen/S) won her opening fight against Khrystyna Homan (UKR) with Ippon in the Golden Score. In the second round it was the end of the line for her, the 24-year-old from Salzburg lost to Kara Ozdemir, fifth in the Olympics and ninth in the world rankings, after 3:51 minutes of net fighting time with Hansoku-make (after 3 shidos).

Laurin Böhler (-100/LZ Hohenems/V) and Movli Borchashvilli (+100/M&R Galaxy Judo Tigers/W) were eliminated without success. The 29-year-old from Vorarlberg had to admit defeat to Boris Georgiev (BUL) with Waza-ari, the 22-year-old from Vienna suffered an Ippon defeat against Kacper Szczurowski (POL).

On Sunday, Austria’s mixed team will face Bulgaria in round one. “A promotion to the quarter-finals and thus a top 7 placement is our declared goal,” emphasizes ÖJV sports director Markus Moser.
