The Council delivers its individual aid

“Few will achieve what you have achieved.” Abel Caballero, mayor of Vigo, congratulated the thirty-two elite athletes (eighteen men and 14 women) who have accepted the grant launched by the City Council for the sixth consecutive year. He did it during an act at the Central de As Travesas, accompanied by the mayor of Sports, Manel Fernández.

Chess, athletics, badminton, fencing, judo, motorcycling, swimming, skating, squash, tennis, triathlon, sailing, and volleyball. Athletes of thirteen modalities have benefited from a maximum aid of 2,500 euros (the Olympians and Paralympians Nicolás Rodríguez, Susana Rodríguez Gacio and “Chano” Rodríguez, among others) and that has exceeded 36,000 euros in the lump sum. Record of aid and also of public money given to athletes for the excellent results achieved in the 20/21 campaign.

“We have been delivering these grants for six years, but this has to continue and continue to improve,” said the councilor. Since its first call, the City Council has been proposing an increasingly simple procedure to encourage athletes registered in Vigo to apply for this grant. This year the figure of the guide in Paralympic sport has also been included as an elite athlete. Celso Comesaña, who competed in the Tokyo Games as a guide for Susana Rodríguez Gacio in the 1,500 meter sprint (athletics) is the first to open the new possibility.

Judo, with seven athletes, has been the discipline with the most individual grants, seven: Nikoloz Sherazadishvili, María Bernabéu, las Lauras (Bajo, Vázquez and Martínez), Francisco Garrigós and Sara Rodríguez. Behind him, sail (Nico Rodríguez, Martín Wizner, Stella Enríquez and Pablo Astiazarán) and badminton (the Fernández brothers, Jacobo and Gabriel, Javier Álava and Martín Mosquera).

For various reasons (competing, concentrated or outside Vigo), a dozen scholars and several family members attended on behalf of others. Yes they were Carlota Salgado (athletics), Antonio Serrat (triathlon), Andrea Llovo (skating), Rubén Fernández (chess), Rosa María Cano (fencing) or Laura Vázquez (judo), among others.
