Basketball: Warriors coach Kerr takes over US national team

Steve Kerr will be the new coach of the US basketball players from next year. The national association announced. The 56-year-old head coach of the Golden State Warriors will lead the 16-time Olympic champion to the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Summer Games in Paris.

“Our goal is to make our country proud. We will work hard for that,” said Kerr, who led the Warriors to the 2015, 2017 and 2018 NBA title.

For the US team, he was most recently active as an assistant to Gregg Popovich, who resigned after winning the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Kerr, who played as a player with superstar Michael Jordan for the Chicago Bulls, has his first big task to return to the World Cup throne. In 2019 in China, the USA had already failed in the quarter-finals to France.

His “dream job”, as Kerr called the position of Head Coach of Team USA, he will tackle together with Erik Spoelstra (Heat), Monty Williams (Suns) and Mark Few (Gonzaga) as assistant coaches.
