Maradona’s legacy flops at auction

Around 90 objects from the estate of the Argentine football legend Diego Maradona went under the hammer in an international online auction.

A total of $ 26,000 was raised. However, some of the “golden boy’s” possessions, which are estimated to be the most valuable, such as an apartment in the coastal town of Mar del Plata and two vehicles, remained without buyers.

No bid was made for the house in the residential area of Villa Devoto in Buenos Aires, which Maradona had bought for his parents in the 1980s. The oil painting “Entre Fiorito y el cielo” by the artist Lu Sedova was sold for 2,150 dollars (1,897.62 euros) as the most expensive item in the auction, as the Argentine news agency “Telam” reported on Sunday evening (local time). Maradona jerseys for Napoli and the national team also went well.

Thousands of prospects

Thousands of interested parties from Argentina, Italy and other countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Norway had registered for the online auction. According to Mercado, most of the objects were in two containers in Dubai. Maradona had bank accounts, companies, equity investments and real estate around the world at the time of his death. “The selection of items was made by the family, who kept about 80 percent,” said Mercado.

Maradona died of a heart attack on November 25th last year in a private residential complex north of Buenos Aires at the age of 60. He had undergone brain surgery a few weeks earlier. Apparently, massive mistakes had been made in the home care of the former top athlete, who had suffered severe health problems. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating the treating doctors and nursing staff for manslaughter.
