US Open: First the bottles flew, then Zverev Harris wiped away – TENNIS

Up until now, such scenes only existed in tennis when it rained!

Two players, the referee and ball kids wipe the playing field dry with towels. Alexander Zverev (24) and his opponent Lloyd Harris (24) exchange ideas with referee Louise Engzell (41 / Sweden) about what the reason for the South African’s outburst was.

Crazy quarter-finals at the US Open! The Olympic champion beat the outsider 7: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and is in the semi-finals on Friday. His 16th victory in a row! Possible opponent now: As at the Olympics in Tokyo, the world number one Novak Djokovic (34 / Serbia).

But nobody talked about it after the game. So what happened

In the tie break of the first set, Zverev had a set ball against him. The hamburger had already complained about the video walls in the Arthur Ashe Stadium beforehand, because the players could be seen in close-up when serving. That bothered him.

Just when Harris had set ball, Engzell ordered that the place may only be shown in the long shot. That took of course. For Harris, this happened at the most impossible time. Zverev made three points in a row, so fended off the set ball and took the set 7: 6.

Then Harris threw two drinking bottles on the square, which also emptied. Now the strange scenes followed, which should not be missing in any review of the year. Over and above all of this, Engzell apparently “forgot” to punish Harris for his outburst with a warning.

The first sentence was strange anyway. Both players live from their service. Zverev converted up to 92 percent of his first serves into points; But that was not reflected in the result due to the many mistakes in the rest of the game. He had the chance to break early when the score was 2: 2, but missed the two opportunities.

That depended on him, because now the serve left him and Harris seized the opportunity and in turn took the service from the favorite. That seemed like the pick-me-up for the number 4 in the world.

He now broke the South African on his part without any great rallies. Then it went into the said tie break ...

Zverev was now more relaxed, Harris obviously still had a thousand thoughts circling through his head, which affected his game. The five-time Masters winner made a break immediately, was quickly 3-0 ahead and served the round to 6-3.

And so it continues. The Monegasse by choice, who received the SportBILD Award for the “Moment of the Year”, which is his Olympic victory, continued in the third sentence. Immediately two breaks, but that’s not it yet.

After the 4-0 he stumbled again and even gave up his serve. After 2:06 hours, the favorite turned his first match point to 6: 4.

Now there are only two victories left to the first Grand Slam title!
