The armed forces make up almost 70 percent of the Austrian Olympic squad

On July 8th, 2021, the Austrian Olympic squad said goodbye in Vienna

Vienna (OTS) 52 army athletes compete for Austria at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. This means that the Austrian Armed Forces make up almost 70 percent of all athletes who fight for medals under the red-white-red flag in Tokyo. The Olympic team met on Thursday in the Rossauer barracks and was adopted by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

The Austrian Armed Forces sends its athletes to the disciplines of canoeing, athletics, sport climbing, triathlon, rowing, sailing, gymnastics, table tennis, shooting, cycling, judo, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, karate, horse riding and modern pentathlon. With train leader Tanja Frank and train leader Thomas Zajac, the only 2016 Olympic medal winners in Austria are in the squad. They were able to secure the bronze medal in sailing in Rio.
In the sport of karate, which will not be Olympic again next year, an army athlete, Bettina Plank, was also able to qualify.

The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sports with its ten Army competitive sports centers since 1962. More than 450 people are currently part of the military sports sponsorship program. Military sports traditionally provide numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, European and World Championships. These were able to achieve numerous successes and medals for Austria.
