More than one team has their eye on Puerto Rican José Berríos

The deadline to make changes to Major League Baseball (MLB) is right around the corner and one of the names that continues to sound like a potential chip in the market is the Puerto Rican pitcher José Berríos.

The Minnesota Twins right-hander is being mentioned as a possible player to be traded as team management began the process of selling some pieces to get prospects. Designated hitter Nelson Cruz was the first chip and Berríos could be one of the next.

The Twins (43-58) maintain control of Berríos until the 2022 season when he will become a free agent. Apparently, the progress in the negotiations to sign an extension has not been positive and that raises the possibility that the management will choose to change it to cut expenses and, in turn, obtain parts while Berríos is still a high-value product.

Multiple contending teams are studying the water temperatures in the pitching market in hopes of strengthening both the regular rotation and the reliever corps as the postseason approaches.. The Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Blue Jays and Phillies are looking at the talent that could be available by July 30.

Berríos (7-5) has not reached a decision in his favor since June 12. In the past eight outings, he has carried three losses and got no decisions in the remaining five games he started. His ERA is 3.48 and he has 126 strikeouts in 121.2 innings.
