From next season, the English Football Association wants to attach more importance to the number of headers that are played at English football clubs. The reason is the connection that exists between repeated headbutts and brain injuries.
In a statement, the FA said that “no more than 10 headers may be executed per week of training”. It only concerns balls that come from further than 35 meters. Just think of crosses, corner kicks or free kicks.
The new guideline will be applied to all levels of English football, from the Premier League to the Women’s Super League. On match days, the restriction is logically removed.
“It is absolutely essential that all clubs follow the same guidelines and that the health and well-being of the players is paramount,” the FA said.
