Connor Williams, the starting left guard for most of the past three seasons, has trained as a center at Camp Oxnard.
Coach Mike McCarthy said he wanted versatility from his linemen and that he has always tried to allow his guards to cross as well, in case it is required in season.
“You all know how the offensive line is going,” Williams said. “There are always guys that go down and can’t be healthy all season. It’s always nice to be able to move pieces here and there and have versatility.”
“I hope I never have to play center this year, but in case I have to…”.
The Cowboys opened the doors to their summer home in July and have only had three field practices: Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
The new rules have a lot to do with the collective bargaining agreements between the league and the Players Union, as well as the physical and resource management of the team, since it will be until September 9 that they start the season.
The Cowboys started camp a week earlier than the vast majority of teams, because they start their preseason games a week earlier as well.
Starting Tuesday, the Cowboys will have another three consecutive training days before resting again.
When the day comes to face the Steelers, on August 5, they will have added just nine field workouts in Oxnard, California.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged that they have an interest in signing safety Malik Hooker, whom they have interviewed since free agency opened.
Hooker is in California, within the anti Covid-19 protocols and as of Monday night there was still no report that he had signed with the Cowboys.
