Tsitsipás, the grandmother and the philosopher defeat – Liberation

Beaten Sunday by Novak Djokovic, the Greek player let it be known on Instagram that his father’s mother died just before the match on Sunday.

“Lifting trophies and celebrating victories is something, but it’s not all”. This is the message full of philosophy (tinged with bitterness) posted Monday by Stefanos Tsitsipás, after his defeat in the Roland-Garros final. The Greek player announced on Instagram that he learned of his grandmother’s death just minutes before the start of his lost five-set match against Novak Djokovic on Sunday. He dedicated his first final of a Major to his paternal grandmother, in a message posted on his Instagram account.

“Five minutes before I entered the court, my beloved grandmother lost her fight for life. A wise woman, whose faith in life and willingness to give and give cannot be compared to anyone else I have met, wrote Stéfanos Tsitsipás. It is important that there are more people like her in this world. Because people like her keep you alive. They make you dream ”.

Tsitsipás is considered the heir to the three tennis giants Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. But after hearing the bad news, he said there are more important things in life than winning tournaments.

“Life is not about winning or losing. It’s about enjoying every moment of life, alone or with others, he said. Live a life full of meaning, without misery or abjection. Lifting trophies and celebrating victories is something, but it’s not all ”.

Just after his defeat on Sunday, the Greek player had spoken words heavy with innuendo, astonished at the physical change of Novak Djokovic in the third set, as he dominated the match. Djokovic “Left the court being led two sets to zero. I don’t know what happened there, but when he came back he suddenly became another player. I do not know. I have no idea”, he said at a press conference on Sunday evening.
