BADMINTON: Firm dreams for Spain for Salvadoran Uriel Canjura | News from El Salvador

Uriel Canjura will continue abroad, in 2021, growing like playing badminton. His illusion: the Olympians

A year full of learning, far from home in the middle of a pandemic, but with sporting growth and triumphs. In that, 2020 is summarized for the player of badminton Uriel Canjura.

The Salvadoran athlete, who is in Suchitoto to celebrate the festivities, knows that his year was not as expected, due to Covid19. But, when he was able to compete, he did so by showing how much he has learned and the level reached.

Canjura spent 2020 in Spain, where he plays with the Ovida Club, in Oviedo, and where he studies Marketing and Commercial Activities. The pandemic kept him in quarantine, with long months without going out to train or play, only practicing at home. However, in the end, he was able to return to action.

The 20-year-old national made a self-evaluation of what has been achieved in these months. “My assessment of this year is that it has not been entirely bad. This is because with the Club (of Oviedo) we are in a good place in the League, and thank God I got a medal in the International Mexican. So it has been good, “he told Cancha.

Uriel recalled that among his participations he was at the “55 Portuguese International Championships 2020” in Portugal, where he closed in the first round; the “XI Internacional de Aguascalientes 2020”, where bronze was hung; and kept pace, in the Spanish “Top8 LaLigaSports”.

And, upon returning to the country, in recent weeks, he competed in the National Team Championship and was champion. That complemented the absence of more events, and it all adds up to his goal of scoring world ranking points in his quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. If not, the Federation will request a “wild card” (invitation card) for him.

“What they did need is the tournament here, in El Salvador (individually), and also the Pan American, since due to the pandemic both could not be held,” he clarified.

“But the best of the year was the medal in Mexico, which filled me with great emotion. Now, the plans for 2021 are not clear, we are still defining the critical path. But the job for next year is to be able to return to Spain and focus on the tournaments that I may have, both international and in the League, “he added.

Now, the Spaniard is “happy to spend with the family”, this hard year. “I’m always training, but I was able to escape for a few days to be with them,” he reiterated.
