For the first time since the beginning of March, the Luminus Arena was allowed to swing open its doors again for its supporters yesterday. But not all supporters adhered to the imposed corona measures during the match against KV Mechelen. Neither the safe distance nor the mask obligation was respected by all supporters.
Minister of Sports Ben Weyts immediately intervenes and halves Genk’s stadium capacity. Only 2,000 supporters are allowed in against KV Oostende. “I am very sorry to have to make a stone of my heart,” he says.
“But I had announced in advance that we would impose sanctions if the agreements were not honored. I have stuck out my neck to allow competitions to take place with the public.”
“If everyone can determine from the living room for themselves that the agreed safety rules are not being respected, then I must act. We must really be aware of the exemplary role that the Pro League clubs have in this.”
Genk had sent an open letter to its supporters earlier this day. “We strongly condemn this behavior. To these dozens of supporters: this is a blow to everyone at KRC Genk and by extension the entire society.”
Weyts’ decision therefore comes as no surprise. “This was to be feared,” said spokesman Peter Morren. “We knew the minister could make this decision.”
“Of course we regret what happened against Mechelen on Sunday. That was also stated in our open letter. But we are also powerless. There is consultation at several levels, with all stakeholders involved.”
There were 3,140 Genk supporters in the stadium against KV Mechelen. 5,000 places were made available. Due to the decision of Ben Weyts, the number of places available for the home game against Ostend drops to 2,500.
