Wednesday’s announcement that the Ryder Cup has been postponed from this fall to 2021 will have an immediate and direct impact on the golf calendar at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club:

The Presidents Cup, an important international team competition such as the Ryder Cup, has been moved from its 2021 date to Quail Hollow until 19-25 September 2022.

The Wells Fargo Championship, which had been moved from Quail Hollow to TPC Potomac in Maryland by 2021, will remain in Quail Hollow that year, will go to Potomac in 2022 and return to Charlotte in 2023.

The Presidents Cup, a contested match-play event between the United States and a team of non-European international golfers, has been scheduled for Quail Hollow from September 30 to October. 3, 2021.

The Ryder Cup, the main international golf event that pits the United States against Europe, will move from 21 to 26 September 2021 to the Whistling Straits of Wisconsin, where it was scheduled to be played from 22 to 27 September this year.

The two international competitions take place in alternate years, with the Ryder Cup being played in even years and the Presidential Cup in odd years. That sequence changed in 2001 after events were postponed a year after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The PGA Tour resumed recently with no fans present. The Memorial, scheduled for next week, would have been the first tournament to have fans in attendance, but those plans were eliminated due to the growing concern of the coronavirus in Ohio.

The four main golf tournaments have also been affected by the coronavirus. The British Open has been canceled, while the US Open, PGA Championship and Masters have been postponed to later dates this year.
