AC Milan has been rushing from success to success in the league for weeks. This winning streak now has consequences. The club canceled Ralf Rangnick’s coaching post. The Italians changed their minds.

AThe AC Milan team turned up again late Wednesday evening to prove it. 2-1 in the league game against Sassuolo Calcio, double pack of superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The first double pack since returning to Milan earlier this year. In the table, the AC initially took fifth place. Milan won seven of nine league games after the Corona break. A series of successes with consequences.

Because instead of Ralf Rangnick, AC Milan will continue to rely on Stefano Pioli in the future and have extended the contract with his trainer by two years. This was announced by the traditional club from Serie A on Tuesday evening after midnight, i.e. after the success against Sassuolo Calcio. In the past few months there has been speculation about a change from Rangnick to Italy.

“Stefano is the right man to lead the team we want: successful, young and hungry,” said the technical director of Milan, club legend Paolo Maldini. The former world-class defender is said to have never been a friend of Rangnick’s commitment.

“Ralf Rangnick has no function at AC Milan”

His adviser had announced an end to the negotiations before the away game. “AC Milan and Ralf Rangnick have agreed that it is not the right time at the moment, and that there is no momentum for working together. Because of this and taking into account the good development and the results under coach Pioli, it was jointly decided that Ralf Rangnick will not take on a role at AC Milan, ”said a statement.

Rangnick, currently Head of Sport and Development Soccer at Red Bull, wanted to come to Milan as a new strong man – coach and sports director in one. According to BILD, it was out of the question for him to only perform one of the two functions. In this double role, he was twice very successful during his time at RB Leipzig: in the promotion season to the Bundesliga 2015/16 and in the 2018/19 season with the qualification for the Champions League and the move into the DFB Cup final against FC Bayern. Milan first made an inquiry to Rangnick in November, and the negotiations have since become a hanging game.

Pioli had taken over the team last October and signed a contract until the end of the season. The 54-year-old had come in for criticism after a difficult start, and there were many signs that Rangnick had been taken over. But after the Corona forced break, the downed traditional club turned up and remained unbeaten in all games. Milan is now clearly on the Europa League course. “We always said it would take time to see the results of his work,” said Maldini. “We now have proof that quality and professionalism always pay off.”
