NFL plans to allow social justice stickers on helmets

The NFL plans to allow players to have stickers on the back of their helmets bearing the names or initials of victims of systemic racism and police violence, a league source told Jason Reid of The Undefeated. Individual players will have the option to choose different names, the source said.

The league has been in talks with the players and their union since June to somehow honor these victims. The NFL also plans to have “Lift Every Voice And Sing,” traditionally known as the Black National Anthem, played live or played before every game in Week 1.

Unlike the NBA, which allows players to wear slogans on their jerseys, the NFL will stick to names and initials once a final agreement is made with the NFL Players Association. The program will continue throughout the season.

This move is sort of a breakthrough because the league has not allowed such a message, except during its October NFL Crucial Catch program in conjunction with the fight against breast cancer, and in its November greetings to the military. . Players have also been allowed to represent a cause on their cleats one weekend per season.

But a 17-week campaign like the one planned is something new for the NFL.

A list of names and initials for use on helmet decals is being prepared by the league and the NFLPA. Players were encouraged to provide these names and initials.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
