The Newcastle takeover saga is taking another turn, with reports that the American consortium is interested

Former Liverpool technical director Damien Comolli is leading an American consortium that is reportedly interested in taking over from Newcastle United should the offer led by Saudi Arabia fail.

The Premier League has yet to decide whether a Middle East consortium – led by financier Amanda Staveley – has passed or failed the owner and director tests that started 14 weeks ago.

Magpies head coach Steve Bruce has asked the Premier League to make a “quick” decision about the offer based on continued certainty about Tyneside.

The American businessman Henry Mauriss has already signaled his interest in a deal if the proposed takeover should fail. ClearTV’s manager is said to have verbally offered the magpies £ 350m.

Now the Daily Star reports United have been shortlisted by an American consortium led by Comolli who wants to buy a Premier League club.

As with Mauriss, the consortium is expected to consider a move if the takeover led by Saudi Arabia fails.

Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham are the other clubs that are reported to be considered. The Hammers are considered the leading candidate for the consortium, provided David Moyes’ team avoids relegation.

Comolli has worked at Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool in various recruitment and strategic positions.
