Xiaohai: Poetry Filled with the Flavor of Fireworks

American literary critic Susan Sontag wrote in “The Conscience of Words”: “The writer’s duty is to let us see the world as it really is, full of different demands, parts and experiences.” As a representative poet of the “third generation of poetry”, Xiaohai’s creation has this quality. His poems exude a strong flavor of fireworks in the process of being close to and transcending daily life, expressing the poet’s understanding of the real world and his thinking about the original appearance of life. The fireworks in Xiaohai’s poems are the mellow taste of life, and also present the real, warm and pure beauty of human feelings.

The first place that Xiaohai’s poems reach is home, where there is a father with knee pain, a mother standing at the window watching, a mother-in-law who climbs the stairs with difficulty after returning from shopping early in the morning, a wife who “pillows” the big moon to sleep, and a daughter who lost her badminton and shouted to the upstairs with her racket. These poems are full of the strong flavor of fireworks, expressing the poet’s love and gratitude for his family. He wrote about his mother, and how she stood at a fixed window upstairs every day to look at “me” returning home. Whenever “I” happened to arrive at the door of my house, “I don’t need to knock on the door/she has opened the door for me/the food she cooked is constantly steaming/my rice and chopsticks/are placed in a fixed position”. When my mother is not around, I find that “I” can’t let her go so hard, “My good mother is not by my side/but I know she is waiting for me/when she stands at the window/I will not leave that day” (“Missing My Family”).

Literature is a science of humanity, and it can only radiate life when it dwells in the fireworks of the human world. In his poems, Xiao Hai shows various situations in the world, reveals the world’s human nature, and conveys the poet’s kindness and sincerity. For example, he writes about wearing a mask, “dull, only eyes and ears exposed/holding a quilt, humming songs all day long.” Cotton’s little brother (“Song of the Cotton Shop”), the shoe repairman (“Shoemaker”) who hopes that “one more customer will come / of course it will be better”, and the “young and responsible” who often avoids The stranger’s pockmarked uncle (“Brother-in-law”) and the waste picker who “rummaged to himself while rummaging through the trash cans under the overpass” (“The Waste Pickers”). From these ordinary people, the poet saw the hardships and difficulties of life, and also felt their optimism and strength. In the attachment to the world and the discovery of the beauty of human nature, the poet’s concern and best wishes are placed. Another example is “Everyone, let’s have a bowl of ramen – given to a Hui family”, which contains a kind of simple power. “My wife and I/often take Route 31/we always meet/those Hui people/once we met/the child/and another time we met/the child’s mother//my mother-in-law told me/that there is a new one on our street The poet went on to write that he heard three “loud bangs” and thought something had happened, but it turned out that “there was only a chef in white clothes and a white hat/standing at the door of the shop/hands.” The dough/thrown it hard on the chopping board/made such a big noise/just to attract attention.” The descriptions of actions such as “standing”, “falling” and “making” in the poem vividly convey the mentality of the Hui master in order to make a living and hope to attract more customers, and also portray his diligence and simplicity.

The smell of fireworks is a beam of warm light, flashing in the daily life of roosters crowing and dogs barking. The poem “Rooster Crow” describes a couple dealing with the crowing of a rooster late at night. The conversation between the two is humorous and full of love, reflecting the poet’s ability to find joy in ordinary life.

Excellent poets always have a heart of compassion and compassion. The poet writes about visiting patients in the hospital, which makes people feel warm and touching. His words of comfort to seriously ill patients (“I hope you live, don’t think blindly – to a friend”), his blessings to his old friend the poet and patient Tao Wenyu (“Blessing Wenyu”), and his blessings to the patient who had “three-quarters removed” The understanding and sympathy of the old man from the frontier who had a “stomach” (“It’s Not an Accident”) express the poet’s compassion. Xiao Hai’s “Blessing Wen Yu” conveys sympathy, encouragement, and blessings through the details of “smoking” with Wen Yu, as well as emotions of worry and reluctance. As a medium and carrier of daily life communication, “smoke” has achieved the artistic effect of “silence is better than sound”.

Xiao Hai is a singer who writes poetry standing in the crowd. He writes about the dust in the low places, his hometown elsewhere, the soul deep in the times, and you and me in the world. In the chanting of these human scenes, he presents a picture scroll of life filled with fireworks and expresses his love for the world and humanity.
