2023 was far from being a great year for River on the international stage. Although he managed to overcome a bad start in the group stage and became very strong at the Monumental, he had a hard time finding his footing every time he played as a visitor. And just like in 2022 with Marcelo Gallardo, Martín Demichelis’ team could not get past the round of 16 and was very far from the goal set at the beginning of the season.
River’s poor performance in the last editions of the Copa Libertadores did not manage to erase everything that the Greatest achieved in recent times. For this reason, the Millonario continues to be one of the best ranked teams on the continent. This was reflected in the Club Ranking established by Conmebol, which through various statistical criteria also serves to establish who will be the so-called “seeded” teams for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.
The 2023 Conmebol Club Ranking placed River in second position. The Millionaire went back one box with respect to the latest records of the South American entity. The one that remained with the leadership was Palmeiras, which despite not having won the title in the last edition, played five of the last six semifinals of the Copa Libertadores. The third? Boca Juniors, who despite reaching the final, were left without the chance to play in the Cup in 2024.
In this way, River will be one of the eight “group heads” of the next edition of the Copa Libertadores. Among the seven teams that Millonario will avoid in the group stage are Fluminense (2023 Libertadores champion), Liga de Quito (South American Cup champion) and the six best-placed teams in the Conmebol Club Ranking. The good news is you won’t cross starters with most of the Brazilian teams.
